What does Trail Planner actually do?
It turns "I want to go hiking" into a trip you can act on: pick a trail, see which permits it needs and who issues them, check the weather for your dates, and get a gear checklist built from that trip. All four live on one dashboard instead of a dozen browser tabs.
Which trails are covered?
We are starting with Washington — five parks and wilderness areas — and adding regions deliberately rather than scraping everything at once. A few hundred well-researched trails with real permit information is more useful than fifty thousand entries nobody has checked.
Does it apply for my permits?
No. It tells you which permits a trip needs, links you straight to the issuing agency, and tracks what you have secured so nothing is forgotten. Applying still happens on the agency’s own site — those systems differ wildly, and quietly getting it wrong would cost you the trip.
Where does the weather come from?
Public forecast data, mapped to your trip dates and the elevation you will actually be at — a valley forecast is not the forecast at the pass. Forecasts are fetched when you look at them and never stored, so what you see is never a stale copy.
How does the gear list work?
Every trip gets a checklist based on its length, season, and type. Anything already in your gear locker is marked as owned, so what remains is the genuine gap — the things you still need to pack, borrow, or buy.
Can I plan a trip with friends?
Not yet. Shared trips, invitations, and messaging are the next major release. Today every trip belongs to one person, which is a deliberate choice — sharing done badly is worse than sharing done later.
What does it cost?
Nothing while we are in beta. If paid plans arrive, trips you have already planned stay yours and stay readable — we are not going to hold your itinerary hostage.
